We started working fully remotely last week at Koan to do our part in helping to “flatten the curve”. Our world has fundamentally changed almost overnight. You’re likely feeling similar stress and uncertainty as we are, perhaps in combination with grappling with how to work fully remotely for the first time as a team?
At Koan we’re finding the best way to move forward in this new reality is by supporting our customers and continuing to build tools to help teams do their best work. So today we’re announcing a free add-on for Koan to help our community to work better remotely: Daily Check-ins.
Almost a year ago, we started internally beta- testing the feature as a way to build positive habits of accountability and transparency and keep our team connected. Though Koan is based in Portland (Oregon), we regularly work across flexible locations and times. We built Check-ins as a great tool for ourselves and made it fully native to Slack to keep the experience virtually frictionless. And though we fell in love with it (and gradually turned on this “secret feature” for a few Koan customers), we could never quite figure out how to make it an official part of the Koan family. Now we’ve kicked Check-ins out the door in the hope it can help your team too; we hope you love it as much as we do.
Acting as a virtual team stand-up, Check-ins ask for the things that you accomplished, your priorities for the day ahead, and any concerns the rest of the team should know about. It’s done directly in Slack on an automated schedule. By aligning every day in this simple way, you can build accountability and transparency together even when not working from the same office.
We’re still focused on building the best OKR experience we can, but we decided to launch Check-ins publicly because changing times have made remote work more important than ever. There will be more work to do to make this a fully- featured and integrated part of Koan, but we wanted to get it out quickly and would love your feedback.
We hope that you’ll give Check-ins a try and see how you can best structure your work over the coming weeks. More than ever, staying connected and engaged will be paramount to keeping course, and we believe Check-ins can be part of the glue that holds your team–newly remote or otherwise–together.
