Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Koan

We’re a small, venture-backed team on a mission to make work better. We're capable, innovative, and not above learning a few lessons along the way. The standards are high—and we hold ourselves to them.

Koan values Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DE&I). One of our core values is to prioritize our employees and create a great environment for all employees to work in. We care about each other’s well being and growth, both professionally and personally. We focus on diversity and inclusion so that every employee can feel a sense of belonging. This gives us the fuel to do amazing work for our customers.

At the heart of Koan's business, we seek to inspire and nurture an inclusive culture - understanding that each person brings distinct and valuable experiences to the table. We prioritize creating a work environment that is diverse not only in gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religion and age, but also in cultural backgrounds, life experiences, thoughts and ideas. Embracing diversity enhances our work culture and helps to create a culture of empowerment, one that fosters innovation, economic growth and new ideas.

We acknowledge both the historical and existing structural barriers to inclusion within the technology space and we acknowledge the part we have played to uphold those systems. We are committed to doing our part to end systemic racism, uplift BIPOC voices, and grow their presence, especially in our field.

All that being said, we acknowledge that the lack of diversity on our staff doesn’t currently reflect this and we recognize that our impact has yet to match with our intentions. We are in this for the long haul and are constantly working towards improvement. Some of the work that we’re actively doing to make Koan an inclusive and equitable workplace includes:

  • Forming a DE&I committee and hosting monthly all-team discussions
  • Signing the TechTown PDX Diversity Pledge and engaging monthly with our community
  • Improving our hiring processes and leveraging other industry best practices
  • Building a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement
  • Setting annual and quarterly OKRs that work towards our DEI efforts
  • Partnering and collaborating with an objective third-party DE&I consultant to help educate us, identify and confront our biases, and work to develop a more inclusive culture
  • Create a shared DEI Calendar & Resource Library
